Just minutes from Moonbow Retreat, Cumberland Falls is one of Kentucky’s most breathtaking natural treasures. Known as the “Niagara of the South,” the magnificent waterfall drops 68 feet and stretches 125 feet across before thundering into a dramatic, forested gorge.
 

On clear nights near a full moon, the mist rising from the falls can create the legendary Cumberland Falls moonbow, an extraordinarily rare nighttime rainbow formed when moonlight passes through the mist. An arch of soft white light appears near the base of the falls and can continue downstream, creating an unforgettable sight that draws nature lovers, photographers, and curious travelers from around the world.
 

Cumberland Falls and Victoria Falls in Africa are celebrated as two of the world’s most famous and reliable places to witness a waterfall moonbow. This remarkable phenomenon requires a bright full moon, clear skies, flowing water, and abundant mist to align at just the right moment.
 

Generations of visitors have traveled to Cumberland Falls to experience this natural wonder. The moonbow has become such an important part of the area’s history and identity that the last hotel located on the site was named the Moonbow Inn in its honor.
